If you could sell sleep, I'd be the first in line -- a pillow in one hand and a wallet in the other.

Site news: "New Technology"

You might have noticed that if you clicked the first two thumbnail pictures above you were taken to a moving, panoramic scene, as opposed to the usual static photo. Pretty cool,eh?

With my new "pixaround" software I plan to make a gallery of 3D 'Mike's-Tokyo-life scenes', and also to post them occasionally here on the Hunkabutta toppage.

Also, the baby pictures gallery is still in the works, so to all you eager family members, be patient.

Well, things are sort of starting to get back to normal, in a 'mental-headspace' kind of way. Karen and I are still not getting much sleep, but Jack is kind enough to sleep more in the evening than he does in the day, so Karen and I can still maintain the semblance of a normal sleep pattern.

The good news is that Karen's sister, Julie, is coming all the way from Canada to help out. I think that that's awfully kind of her. And the best part about having a guest who has come to help out with the baby is that you don't have to get the house all tidy before they arrive. I mean, that's why they're there in the first place right, to "help out". As a matter of fact, Karen and I haven't washed any dishes or done any laundry in over a week, just in anticipation of her arrival!(...just kidding Julie).

So far I have gotten one week of successful parenting behind me -- only 18 more years to go. I feel so grown up.

Hopefully this weekend I'll get a chance to work on the new 'Birth and Baby Picture' gallery.

By the way, did I tell you that I have the most beautiful baby in the world?

Babies are great, really: hours of entertainment. We've already saved a fortune on movie rentals. However, it's a real challenge trying to do everything just right so that they don't cry -- I'll do anything to avoid hearing that dreaded wail of preverbal discontent.

As I carry Jack around the house, or check his diapers, or just snatch him up when I see the first furrow-browed look of grumpiness pass across his face, I am reminded of an old game I had as a child: Operation.

Do you remember that game? It was really nerve wracking. You played the doctor with these little tweezers connected to a battery. You were supposed to try and remove your patient's bones, but if you slipped and your tweezers touched the edge of the 'bone hole' a terrible buzzer would sound and your patient's nose would turn into a flashing red light -- You just killed your patient and lost your turn. Well, Jack's wail is like that buzzer, and keeping him content is 'not touching the edge of the bone hole'.

To be honest, I never really cared much for children before, they always kind of reminded me of retarded adults. However, I've discovered that there is a world of difference between your own children and other people's children. Simply put, your children are beautiful and great, and other people's children are flawed, annoying versions of their parents. Don't ask me why this is so, it just is. I think it's written in the Bible somewhere.

Anyway, the fun continues, and I think that it's only going to get better. I can't wait to teach him banjo! Maybe next week.

Site News:

I'm a little bit worried that because of my enthusiasm for being a new father I'll inadvertently let hunkabutta evolve into one big, gratuitous baby picture site. Consequently, I've decided to make a baby picture gallery page. That way, grandparents and other people eager to see new baby pics can have their fill, and others, wise enough to know that 'other peoples babies' are not especially interesting, can avoid the baby pics and enjoy the usual hunkabutta fare of Tokyo life scenes. I'll let you know when this new gallery is up and running.

By the way, have you checked out the other new hunkabutta photo galleries lately?
