Things are going well. My back is slowly getting better. I'm still trying to learn Japanese. Jack is getting to be more like a little boy and less like a baby everyday.

Life is good.

Karen, my wife, put a want ad for a secondhand sewing machine in the local English classifieds recently. She got an unexpected response to her ad the other day.

Below is a copy of the email that Karen wrote to her friend telling her about it.

His purring voice should have clued me in, but anyway...here's our conversation:

Him: I'm calling about your ad.
Me: Oh, you have a sewing machine?
Him: Yes, I do.
Me: Okay, are you selling it for cheap?
Him: Yes, very cheap.
Me: How cheap?
Him: Very cheap. Where do you live?
Me: Tokyo
Him: Where in Tokyo?
Me: North Tokyo
Him: Whereabouts in North Tokyo?
Me: (stalling) What kind of machine is it?
Him: A sewing machine. JUST what you're looking for. (heavy breathing begins to become obvious)
Me: Yes, what brand is it?
Him: Ummm..........a Brother.
Me: I didn't know Brother makes sewing machines.
Him: Umm...
Me: Where do YOU live?
Him: I live very nearby. I would like to show you my machine.
Me: (chuckling now) You'd like to show me your machine?
Him: Yes, it's very simple.
Me: ?????
Him: Can I come over?
Me: Right now? You want to come over with your sewing machine?
Him: Yes I want to give you my machine. (heavy breathing becomes very obvious here, punctuated with small moans)
Me: Do you find sewing machines arousing?
Him: Ah-ah-ah
Me: That is SO interesting. You are a very big freak, man!
Him: Uh-uh-ooohhh.
Me: Are you done yet? I have to feed my son his lunch.
Him: Give me your email address and I'll email you some photos.
Me: Okay, gotta go!
Him: Grunt grunt.

We have a friend in the neighbourhood, let's call her Akiko, who often does little favours for us. Akiko has a niece, let's call her Rieko, with a young baby boy.

Rieko is in her early twenties, sweet, but kind of from the rough side of town. We met her several months ago. She had her baby at the time and had just gotten married. Although it was never explicitly stated, I think that she got married because she was pregnant. Well, her and her husband, a young man of the overly-tanned-Hawaiian-style-gangster variety, were only married for a few months before he was off cheating with one of his old girlfriends. A divorce soon followed. Now Rieko and her baby are in a pretty tough situation. I think they've been staying with her parents.

The other night we heard from Akiko that Rieko has been seeing a new guy for the past little while. Last week he took her up north to Nagano to meet his parents. It seems that they're getting pretty serious. The catch is, they didn't bring the baby. In fact, they didn't even mention the baby. They pretended that she didn't have any children.

Is that over the top or what? Is that not so "Three's Company" circa 1981...

I just got back from the Tokyo Bloggers meetup at the Pink Cow in Harajuku. As usual, it was a great time. Most of Tokyo's best and brightest bloggers were there.

------------------------------------

Today I thought I'd share with you a few photo sites that I've been checking out recently.

academicinfo.net -- A collection of links to various historical photo archives.

michal-macku.cz -- A Czech photographer doing some really interesting work with abstract human figures

ahc.uwyo.edu -- Turn of the century North American Native photographer

photoeye.com -- Chinese photographer doing work that resembles traditional Asian painting styles.

whiskeytown.net -- Collection of various photographers. My favourite is Mary Ellen Mark.

czechslovakphotos.com -- Collection of Czech photographers doing some interesting work.

Enjoy...
