We had a triple-couple date this past
Saturday.
Karen, Jack and I went to Zakuro Iranian
restaurant with Trudy, Mark and their
baby
Jo, and our new friends Mhairi and
Makis.
We all ate until we couldn't move.
Above are a few pictures from our couples'
night out as well as a few shots of
the Java
programming club meeting that I've
been talking
about all week.

My Java users' group meeting was a
great
success. Sri's presentation on Blue
Martini
was just right, considering the audience,
and everybody seemed to have gotten
a lot
out of it.
Now it's time to start looking for
next month's
presenter. We're thinking of arranging
a
discussion panel but we're not sure
if we
can pull it off. It can be difficult
to get
people to speak for free -- everybody's
so
busy here in Tokyo.

Today's pictures were taken around
my neighbourhood,
in case any of you were curious as
to my
domestic surroundings.
Enjoy.

Tonight my Java Users group, NinJava, is having it's monthly meeting and presentation
here in my office -- Java is a programming
language. I volunteered the use of my company's
largest meeting room. It should be a good
time, I know that I'll meet a lot of people,
and I've been looking forward to it all month.

In other news, I just talked to my boss and
it turns our that they won't be needing me
to go to Osaka after all.
I have mixed feelings about this. In
one
way I'm disappointed because I wanted
to
see Osaka and because I wanted to work
on
a big project (it would have been for
Matsushita,
some part of Panasonic). On the other
hand,
it's kind of a relief in that it would
have
been a hassle to move and arrange for
Jack
and Karen to come and stay with me.
Oh well, I guess it's still pretty cool just
to be able to work in Tokyo in the first
place.

Jack spoke his first word last night: "Da
da". I know what you're thinking, 'It
was probably just babble that sounded like
a word to his over-eager parents.' Well,
let me tell you, that wasn't the case at
all.
He was definitely repeating after us. He
was straining and contorting his face, desparately
trying to articulate the consonant. It was
real work. It was like he gave birth to that
syllable, and afterward he looked sated and
content.
It was quite the wondrous experience.
Of course Karen was jealous and spent the
rest of the night saying to Jack:
"C'mon Jack... Mmmum Ma, Mmmum
Ma."
Sorry Karen, but you just can't compete
with
the excitement generated when good
'ole "Da
da" comes home from work.
Don't worry. When he takes his first step,
I'll make sure it's in your direction, just
so as you don't feel left out or anything...
( ;-}).

In other news, I just found out today
that
my company might send me to Osaka for
two
months. It's not definite yet, and
I told
them that I'd only go if they put me
up in
a place where Jack and Karen could
stay.
So long as we're not separated for
too long,
it should be a fun trip, a kind of
working
vacation for the family, and I'm looking
forward to it.
