I came across something really ironic today while surfing the net.
It turns out that one of the victims of the
attack on the Pentagon, Max Beilke, survived
both the Korean and Vietnam wars, and on
top of that, he is officially recognized
as the very last US combat soldier to leave
Vietnam back in 1973. He was working with
Veteran affairs at the Pentagon.
So strange to have lived through all of the
horrendous things that this guy obviously
had, and then to end up dying violently while
sitting at a desk in Washington.

The theme of today's photos is 'the place
brought into perspective by the person.'

The initial glory of this 'living alone like
a bachelor thing' is starting to fade quickly.
I've been living off of cold pizza
and convenience
store lunch boxes, and it's starting
to show.
Last night I stayed up until 3:30 a.m.
playing
video games, just because I could.
I actually
got bored around midnight, but felt
some
strange compulsion to forge on with
the game.
The biggest thing I had planned for this
week was to change the strings on my guitar,
but I just can't seem to be bothered.
I don't know what my problem is. I used to
be a world class bachelor -- industrious,
social, flashy. I guess, like Rocky when
he lost to Clubber Lang (Mr. T) in Rocky
II, I've lost the 'eye of the tiger.' I'll
never be the same bachelor that I once was.
Yes, I'm getting tired of all of this free
time and privacy. I guess it's a case of
be careful what you wish for.

Karen and Jack have been gone for a
week
now. For the first time in my life
I find
myself looking at photos in a sentimental
way -- what does that say? Don't tell
me.
Anyway, because I'm missing them I thought
that I'd introduce you all to Karen's latest
web hero -- Check out the unstoppable flava
of the one and only Super Greg!
Make sure that you click his movie link,
which is on the bottom half of his homepage.
If you want, you can download the movie as
a zip file and then you can save it on your
own computer.
Somebody else saved it and turned it into
an
interactive SuperGreg animation.
Love to Karen and Jack in Canada...

I'm starting to scare myself. Recently I've
been reading about and been fascinated by
two ominous subjects:
Memetic Engineering
and
Contemporary Fighting Arts
I'm serious.
I can understand why the memetic engineering
thing grabbed my interest -- it's a pragmatic
application of academic social sciences.
After all, I am a trained anthropologist
and archaeologist.
However, I don't know what I find so fascinating
about Sammy Franco's Contemporary Fighting
Arts (CFA), particularity his latest book
War Machine. To be honest, I'm the most unaggressive
person that I know. I've never (ever) been
in any kind of a fight, none whatsoever,
and I honestly hope that I can maintain that
perfect record.
That said, I must admit that I find myself
drawn to the premise of CFA which is "a
'reality-based' combat system specifically
designed for real-world self-defense."
For quite some time now I've been fishing
around for some sort of physical activity
to get me back in shape. Sitting at a desk
for two years has turned me into a gut-sucking-in
slob.
I hate sports, so joining a team or some
such thing is out of the question. I love
music, so I thought I'd take flamenco dancing
lessons, but that's not very practical here
in Tokyo. Maybe self-defense training is
the answer -- it just seems so empowering.
Like I said, I'm starting to scare myself...
